Hiding in Singapore: The Journey Between
with Liu Bo Lin

On 2 January 2025, I had the honour to partake in Liu Bolin’s collaborative public artwork titled “Hiding in Singapore: The Journey Between” organized by DECK. The artwork explores the tension between individuality and collective identity within Singapore’s diverse social and historical context and in celebration of Singapore’s SG60. Participants were carefully painted by a group of volunteers to blend into iconic locations such as National Gallery Singapore and Clifford Pier, creating the illusion that they are disappearing into their surroundings. This act of camouflage becomes a symbolism that individuals can become “invisible” within a larger society, while still contributing to a shared national identity. The phrase “journey between” is inspired by personal identity and collective belonging, reflecting Singapore’s development from a migrant port into a multicultural nation. The artwork was exhibited in East Garden Gallery, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore from 22 January to 23 February 2025.
